Unlocking a Sustainable Future Through Sport
We want a world that is healthy, peaceful, social and sustainable.
We approach the transformation from the desired end state: fully achieved SDGs goals. What are the political requirements for achieving this vision? What needs to be done to implement a sports event in a truly climate-friendly manner? With our ambitious and systematic framework we leverage the sustainable transformation in sports organizations and support athletes, clubs, events and associations to tackle the complexity of becoming sustainable.
We want to accelerate sustainable change within sports organisations. The SDGs show us the pathway towards sustainability, yet too often we fail to turn them into action.
Our framework defines sustainability principles for guidance and provides practical instructions for implementing these principles in order to achieve desirable future states. For the first time, the world of sport has a clear roadmap for addressing the challenges of our time and fulfilling the SDGs. This is made possible because we developed our framework from both perspectives: the SDGs and the world of sport.
Our framework translates the 169 targets of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals into six areas of action for athletes, clubs, associations and events. This SPORTS20 standard is the first guideline to support athletes, clubs and organisations in addressing the complexity of sustainable development.
Not only minimising the FOOTPRINT — i.e. avoiding, preventing and reducing one’s own harm to the environment and society — but also, and especially, enhancing the HANDPRINT — i.e. mitigating the harm caused by third parties and creating positive contributions to the environment and society.
Within the six areas of the SPORTS20 framework, we provide guidance for the transformation of mobility and transport, energy, catering and nutrition, the circular economy, the construction and operation of sports facilities, and employee and human rights.
