what we have already achieved
SPORTS20 invited to the “Global Sports and Sustainability Forum” on May 26, 2025, which took place in cooperation with Foundations 20 and the “Climate Solutions Forum” on May 27 and 28 in Cape Town. In collaboration with the Foundations 20 event at the G20 summit, we wanted to discuss how sport could be used as a driver for cross-sectoral developments to promote a more sustainable future. The aim was to identify the potential of sport to have an impact beyond sport, for example in the economy, infrastructure, nutrition, education, and social development sectors. We focused in particular on the integration of regional perspectives. Therefore, representatives of regional organizations shared their local experiences with us. In cooperation with these organizations from South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa, we aimed to provide a platform for concrete projects and connect them to global approaches. The results of this event directly contributed to the development of a position paper. This paper contained conditions for the promotion of peace and sustainability through sport and was to be presented and discussed at various levels.
As co-host of the Foundations 20 "Climate Solutions Forum 2024," we presented our SPORTS20 framework, showcasing how sports can powerfully drive sustainability. The international foundation platform Foundations 20 invites people every year ahead of the G20 summit to identify solutions to the climate crisis and advocate for sustainable development. With a network of more than 80 of the world's most important foundations, Foundations 20 is the leading international foundation platform. During the panel discussion, our partners from Ghana and Brazil highlighted the severe impact of the climate crisis on their countries and sports, citing extreme heatwaves and flooding as key issues. These conditions are destroying entire livelihoods. Despite other demanding social difficulties, they put climate protection first. In collaboration with us, they have set ambitious goals and taken on the challenges to drive forward the sustainable transformation.
To explore this, we engaged in inspiring future workshops with experts focused on innovative ideas for mobility, equality, human rights, diversity, sustainable construction and sports facilities. Rather than concentrating on the "low-hanging fruits," we set our sights on the challenging "high-hanging fruits" — the real challenges that hold the potential for the greatest impact.
We launched the "Green Futball" project in cooperation with SUCCA Africa and the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA). We drew up a roadmap for achieving short, medium and long-term goals based on the SPORTS20 framework. In May 2024, we met in Accra with SUCCA Africa and the Ghana League Clubs Association to solidify this partnership. During the workshop, we established specific goals and milestones for the development of "Green Futball" and documented the current status of the league. After the workshop, we publicized the collaboration on various TV and radio platforms with national and international coverage. The Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) convened a press conference. SPORTS20 is the official Green Legacy Partner for the Africa Football Business Summit 2024. We are partnering with the Football Foundation for Africa to ensure sustainability in African football. We will deliver a sustainable summit and develop a legacy program for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027. This program is designed to embed sustainability into the core of African football, ensuring long-term positive impacts for the environment and the communities.
